Behind the Scenes: How We Produce Your Articles of Interest Merch

Go behind the scenes of the Articles of Interest merch production process, from design inspired by our episodes to sustainable printing and packaging. See how every shirt tells a story.

From Concept to Screen: Designing Your Merch

Every piece of Articles of Interest merch starts with the stories that shape our podcast. We dig into episode transcripts, listener feedback, and fashion archives to find themes that resonate. For example, our denim series inspired a selvedge line of tote bags & totes collection, while the shirtwaist episode led to a subtle pleat pattern on a apparel collection.

Once we have a concept, we handpick independent artists who understand the nuance of garment history. They sketch multiple iterations, often cycling through a dozen versions before we land on the final design. We then digitize the artwork and test it on different fabric weights to ensure the posters & wall art collection holds its detail after multiple washes.

The Printing Process: Quality at Every Step

We use a combination of screen printing and direct-to-garment (DTG) methods depending on the design and volume. Screen printing gives vibrant, long-lasting color for larger runs. For smaller batch releases or highly detailed illustrations, we rely on DTG to capture every stitch of linework without losing softness.

Every order goes through a stringent pre-press check. We calibrate color profiles to match Pantone references from our design team. A test print is pressed and inspected under full-spectrum light. If it doesn’t meet our standard, the entire batch is reprinted. This attention to detail means you get a shirt that feels as intentional as the stories behind it.

Packaging and Shipping: Getting It to You Safely

We believe the unboxing experience should reflect the care inside. Each item is folded using tissue printed with archival garment labels, then sealed in a compostable mailer. Our fulfillment team works from a climate-controlled warehouse to prevent any fabric or print degradation before shipping.

Orders are shipped via carbon-neutral options where available. We’ve partnered with carriers that offer detailed tracking, and we send you a personal note when your package is on its way. From our hands to yours - we want the delivery to feel like opening a piece of fashion history.

Sustainability Practices in Our Production

Sustainability isn’t an afterthought; it’s woven into our production from the start. We source blanks made from organic cotton or recycled polyester, certified by GOTS or GRS. Our screen printers use water-based inks that are free from heavy metals, and DTG machines use ozone treatment to reduce water waste.

We also run a pre-order system for limited editions to minimize overproduction. Any unsold samples are donated to textile recycling programs or upcycled into patches. Our goal is to create merch that honors the planet as much as the stories we tell.
